Book Review: Miracles and Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories from Moms

Miracles and Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories from Moms is the third book in Nancy B. Kennedy's Miracles and Moments of Grace Series, all of which I have had the pleasure to read.

This book is compiled of stories that will move a mother's heart.  Each story is unique as is each of our mothering experiences.  Some stories are told from a mother's relationship or experience with her own child, while others are told from a woman's relationship with her own mother.  Either way, each story is heartwarming.  Women share their experiences on seeking God's guidance while parenting. Still, other women share funny stories that many moms can relate too.

In one particular story, a mother is reminded of the love and compassion her mother had shown her as she was growing up.  At the time the story was written, the woman was taking care of her mother and become frustrated with something her mom had done.  She extended grace to her mother and remembered that she had once done the same for her.

This is a wonderful book for mothers.  The stories remind us of the importance of motherhood, the special bond between women and their children, and the grace that we should extend to others because of the grace God has extended to us.

I received a free copy of this book from Leafwood Publishers for the purpose of review.  The review is my own opinion of the book.

Book Review: Miracles & Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories from Doctors

When I heard from Nancy Kennedy that she would be having a second Miracles & Moments of Grace book come out, I was so excited. Luckily, the book was made available for review from Leafwood Publishers.

In Miracles & Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories from Doctors, Kennedy has compiled 50 stories from doctors from all walks of medicine.  Each story is unique and touching.  Perhaps my favorite was the story of the new mother who had just given birth to a child with Down Syndrome.  Dr. Eaker told the story of having to "break the news" to this mother.  Her response: "Isn't God great!"  This mother had something in her life that made her believe that God had chosen her to be the mother of this child because she would love her for who she was.

Also included in this book are stories of doctors who experienced both healing and loss of their patients, stories of doctors seeing the humanity of their patients instead of their problems, and doctors who themselves (or a loved one) becomes the patient. Indeed, each story either shows how God works miracles or provides is amazing grace in times of need.

Like the first book in the MMG series, this book did not disappoint. I most definitely recommend this book and can't wait to see if there will be a third!

I received a free copy of this book from Leafwood Publishers for the purpose of my honest review.

Book Review: Miracles & Moments of Grace

Our military is a very important part of our country. Our service men and women, as well as their families, make sacrifices daily. A part of the military that, honestly, I had never heard of until my husband felt a calling to it is the chaplaincy.  My students and many adults ask me, "What is a chaplain?" My simple answer is "a preacher for the military." However, after reading the book Miracles and Moments of Grace: Inspiring Stories from Military Chaplains by Nancy B. Kennedy, even I am reminded that our chaplains are much more than preachers for the military. They are a reminder of God's love, mercy, and grace.

This book compiles true stories, real experiences from our military chaplains of yesterday and today.  In each story, I saw God at work, whether it was through healing or comfort.

Some of the stories remind us that sometimes it is the little things that make a difference in a soldier's life.  Chaplain Lewis told of one thing he missed most....his "real" fork.  Most of us probably wouldn't give our eating utensils a second thought, but to him it was a big deal. Chaplain Lewis longed to have a metal fork for his meals.  Something as simple as a fork can give comfort to a soldier.

For some soldiers, physical activity can bring relief from some of the stress endured from being in a war zone. Chaplain Sifferd told of how the game of golf drove soldiers to higher morale. Not only did Chaplain Sifferd get involved in ministering to his fellow soldiers through the game but people, businesses, and world famous golfers got involved too.  God not only used golf for soldiers, but also used it bring healing to one soldier's mom after the death of his father.

Some of the stories are simple and fun like these, but others are more serious and heartwrenching.  Take for instance the story of Chaplain Martindale who sat at the bedside of a dying soldier writing letters to his wife and children for him. There are the stories of those that served at Ground Zero and off the coast of tsunami stricken lands. I feel compelled to retell each story, but my words can't do them justice.

Chaplains serve in such a vast capacity. They are more than preachers of God's word.  They are symbols of His love and mercy. Our chaplains remind those they serve with of the hope found only in Jesus.

Miracles and Moments of Grace is a wonderful book that is sure to touch the hearts of those who read it.
